Pack your snacks and join us as we journey south to explore what is believed to be the oldest conservation area of its kind in the world, The Wildfowl Trust. Located in the heart of the Pointe-à-Pierre Oil Refinery, this waterfowl sanctuary was established in 1966, to preserve and protect the habitat of endangered and other species of native birds.

With the reality of climate change resulting in the rapid loss of many species in our biosphere, what better time is there to learn about and experience the rich biodiversity that our feathered friends bring to the ecosystems that make up Trinidad and Tobago. Enjoy an afternoon of adventure in nature as you marvel at the brilliant colors and sounds of species such as Purple Gallinules, Blue and Gold Macaws, Scarlet Ibis, and Whistling Ducks. Imagine yourself in an enchanted forest as you amble along Fairy Wood and Devil’s Ear Trails; paths exquisitely carpeted with the blossoms of Flambouyant, Poui and Crepe Myrtle trees. Keep your eyes peeled for sitings of Anhinga, snakebirds, among the 86 species that make the refinery wetlands their home.

To top off your afternoon of immersion in the natural habitats of birds, we will head north to the Caroni Bird Sanctuary. There we will take a leisurely boat trip through the mangrove forest, mudflats and tidal lagoons of the Caroni Swamp (don’t miss the Boas curled up in the trees above) arriving just before dusk to witness the spectacular arrival of the Scarlet Ibis painting the sky ruby red as they glide into their nesting home for the night.
